Guys, I'm a new Vanagon owner('87 GL)and I'm putting together a toolbox to
keep under the rear seat, so I thought I'd ask some of you experienced VW
guys this. Apart from screwdrivers, pliers and duct tape, what are some
handy tools/items I should have on hand in case of emergency?

A couple of oddball items I have along with an assortment of hand tools in my tool box/van for emergency purposes:

A long plastic flexible straw - a poor mans air compressor, works great around spark plugs
a small mirror on an extendable handle - sometimes the only way to see some parts and fasteners
a flexible 'claw' retrieval tool - for reaching into places that your hand either won't reach or that you don't want to put it.
a folding beach mat - so you don't have to lay on the ground
   Stainless steel bailing wire
A large bag with assorted pieces of metric hose, cable ties and shrink tubing

Good luck,
