You must push the shifter down and toward you to get into first and yes, keep
pushing it down and forward to go into reverse.

This could cause those stopped behind you to cringe.  Often times, I'll make
sure the shifter is in 1st by moving it forward and back.  When it goes
forward, I'm sure the backup lights go on.  If I accidentally ease off on the clutch
it will backup.
