One way to do it would be to register it in New Mexico then transfer the
registration to CA.
When I transferred my title from Washington a few months ago it read "gas"
for fuel. I simply pointed out to the DMV guy it's a diesel burner and he
changed it without so much as checking the vehicle. NM is loose like that.

As an afterthought, I should have let them leave it gas, in case it was
totaled (again) I would get five hundred more for it.
