Where it says something like this in a part description... (see below, in
quotes)

" G     >>     31 12 7* "

or

" G     01 01 8>>* "

Is it referring to a production date or chassis number?  What does the "G"
stand for?  What does the asterisk mean?  Generally, how do you interpret
these notations?
