I was using the heater the whole drive (five hours).  Didn't notice it
squeaking, though.

I only use the front heater fan when stopped or going slow.  Once on the
highway, I turn the fan off because, at speed, the fan doesn't add to the
hot air flow ... and only wears itself out.
