My '83.5 now has a beautiful Jetta (or GTI) tach--all the dash guts are
interchangeable if you can read a wiring diagram and match wires. As
mentioned, the redline will be in a range suitable for a very different
engine, so remember '4000 is good enough'. The VDO gauges used in GTIs can
be used with the regular VDO aftermarket sensors (the ones usually sold for
the air-cooled crowd) as well.
