If you replace the whole system (ECU, distributor, spark generator,
injectors, coil, wiring harness as needed)  it can work ok.  People with
1.9l sometimes put in a 2.1l engine and keep the old control system.  I
suspect that it limits performance somewhat.

Otherwise you're going to have trouble going anywhere with no spark...
