Bob, I have a similar switch on my '85 Westfalia (Canadian Model). I was told that it is a emergency shut off for the fuel pump. If the van tips over or rolls there is a mechanism in the switch that will shut off the flow of fuel to the motor. Experts may disagree. George, '85 Westfalia
