I know what you mean, Kim.  The Sprinter is a larger vehicle for sure.  Apparently they come in several sizes and with various roof heights.  I think the thing that makes the Sprinter a worthy contender is the Mercedes 5 cylinder, turbo diesel that moves it along to the tune of 22mpg.  But I really like my Vanagon, so I'll be keeping it a while.
