Toxic? I might as well confess, that box is where I keep all  my "toxic"
materials. I have no heavy wiring in there and it doesn't get unreasonably
hot so it's the safest place in the van.
The contents of that box include alcohol, butane, methylene chloride,
various glues, sealants, cleaning supplies, pressurized cans and first aid
supplies. A roving environmental disaster is what this Vanagon is!
