it might well depend on what model vanagon you have, which you didn't mention in this post look at the coolant hose diagrams on the vanagain.com site - found by clicking on the "Questions - Ask Ken" link in the upper right hand corner there are four diagrams depending on the model and setup Sam -- Sam Walters Baltimore, MD 89 Syncro GL 85 Westy Weekender 84 Vanagon, original owner, soon to be retired, just too many problems All incoming and outgoing email scanned by automatically updated copy of Norton AntiVirus.
