Alrighty then..

I have a good friend of mine that is ga ga over the
thought of putting a German/SA 5-speed in his
wolfsberg. (He is selling plasma as we speak to
afford this)

What I am soliciting is as many opinions as I can with
regard to the pros / cons of said transmission (this
isn't a diesel granny low 5-speed, this is a nicely
spread arrangement with I believe factory .77 or near
final 5th).

Sooo please come one come all toss in your two cents
on why Raj should or should not go to all the expense
of a 5-speed

Thanks!
Brian

I've done this, and its GREAT!
I'd make sure that you do it right and make sure to also convert the
shift linkage to the proper 5-spd linkage when you do it.
I've gained 1-2 mpg since the conversion. (I had the trans rebuilt with
an O/D 5th - the stock 5spd has the same ration 5th as the standard VW
4th.)
The ratios are spaced much better, you particularly notice it on the
hills, allowing you to keep much closer to freeway speeds.
The OD gear puts you at about 3600RPM at 73mph.

If you can afford it, it is a wonderful modification to the Vanagon.
My compliments to Weddle transmission (rebuilt my trnasmisson) and
Volks Cafe (fixed a linkage problem nobody else could figure out)
