The AL27X is the original Alternator for the 83.5-85 1.9 Wasserboxer and is still offered by Bosch. The AL33X is a newer version original installed on 2.1's and is the interchangeable replacement for 83.5-85 and has an extra "W" terminal not utilized on your year. Some 85's used a different alternator, AL30X, with a different connector, although I've never seen one yet. As a reference check the images on the page I designed for Bus Boys for their catalog back in the mid 90s and is now on their website at: http://www.bus-boys.com/charging91.html Jim Thompson oldvolkshome@earthlink.net jim@karmannghia.com http://www.oldvolkshome.com *********************** ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul & Becky Oliver" <oliver8@TDS.NET> To: <vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM> Sent: Monday, August 23, 2004 1:42 PM Subject: Need Alternator 85 water cooled > I'm not sure which alternator (AL33X or AL27XOR) in need for my 1985, 1.9 > water cooled.
