Definitely not normal... I fired mine up for the first time this spring
after owning the van for three years (dunno how long it had been since the
PO lit the fridge). I didn't get any unusual smells at all. I had pulled
it, and cleaned all the fine grit out of the burner box before lighting it,
though.
