Eeeek!   If I were concerned about bears, I wouldn't be planning on
storing my food underneath where I was planning to sleep!  How about
approved "bear boxes"?  Preferably stored waaaaay far from the van!!!

Seriously, maybe some of the northern California web sites have some
useful suggestions for coping with bear concerns, since they know they
have bears up there.
