AFAIK, my '87 Camper still has the original fuel pump on it after 235,000 miles. I have found the biggest killer of fuel pumps (especially VW fuel injection pumps) is letting a vehicle set without running it consistantly. The fuel has a tendancy to gel and whatever water that is in the fuel finds its way into the pump since the pump is the lowest part of the system. So, the later ones only have a filter *after* the fuel pump? Could this be why I hear so much about fuel pump failures?
