The important parts are: Input shaft from the transmission (although not absolutely critical) bell housing from diesel tranny flywheel from diesel starter weird cast aluminum engine mounts bolted to the block carrier bars (fabricated steel bars which run north south and connect to the aluminum mounts with rubber motor mounts.) The oil pan and pickup! part of the oil pan is the filler which should have an integral dipstick. Since your target vanagon is an auto matic, I believe you will be purchasing an adapter plate from somebody. I would recommend Kennedy as theirs is really nicely made. If you are planning on putting a diesel in you should check the various Yahoo groups for more info, and if you are planning a gas I4 you should expect howls from the Subaru fans. I personally side wit the Subaru folks in regards to the gas engine debate, but am currently transplanting a TDI engine into my syncro. Good luck! I searched the archives but didn't really come up with anything useful... I have an '87 GL with auto tranny and I've been mulling over an I4 conversion for some time now. I was in a local junkyard today and saw an intact diesel Vgon. I didn't think to get the year but I can get it, of course (if it matters much). I'm wondering what can be used from that van for a conversion, as opposed to going the 'conversion kit' route- I seem to recall reading about the oil pan and the frame-side motor mounts, but nothing else jumps out. Sorry to be vague, but- can anybody detail this for me, or point me to a list or report from somebody that's done it? Or should I forget it and focus on a kit? Thanks, Robert
