Subject:86 transmission hookup problem
From:Ryan Johnson
Date:Tue, 2 Nov 2004 18:04:07 -0500

The clutch was getting sloppy in my 86 Vanagon, so i pulled off the transmission, removed the pressure plate and clutch disc. Installed new disc and presure plate using guide tool and proper torque wrench.
I know I should have have done the pilot bearing too but I didn't.
I put the tranny back into place with the help of jacks and my wimp brother, making sure the transmission shaft went in the pilot hole, it slid right in, good fit. Installed starter.
I go to start it up and the frickin engine won't turn.
I pull the tranny back off to find that the flywheel is digging into the tranny case at 11 and 5 o'clock from the force of the starter turning over the engine, metal shards make easy evidence.
I can't figure out why this is happening.

Anyone with the same experience? Info. greatly appreciated.
Anyone with ideas? Always welcome.
Guesses? OK

Thanks, RJ
