Happy T-Day.

I'm now in SoCal after a wonderfully uneventful 1100 mile drive down from Oregon.  Yesterday I noticed two things, both when accelerating in first gear.  Taking off with moderate power, I hear a loud metalic rattling from the rear end.  Does not do it when taking off softly or after I get rolling.  Also, I am feeling/hearing a single "pop" that sounds like it is coming from the left, front wheel when I take off.  It feels like the "scrub" you get when turning tightly with 4 wheel drive.   This is a syncro.

I had a VW mechanic listen to it and he thought it is still drivable.  I'm just wondering if anybody has any experience that connects the two noises.  They definitely started happening at the same time.
