Subject:Need info on overhead A/C

Hi!

This weekend I worked on resolving my A/C challenge.

I have installed a poptop (not a Westy poptop but a straight-up) on a Vanagon that had A/C in the back and a long plastic tunnel to bring cold air to the front.

Obviously, I cannot use this A/C configuration anymore since the roof opening is right where the tunnel was.

At first I was thinking of building some sort of pipe system to re-route the cold air along the poptop opening, just above the side windows.

But then, I found a Vanagon (86) in our yard that has the A/C unit in front of the van - thanks Warren...

:O)

The receiver/dryer(whatever the exact name is...) is located just above the front seats instead of in the back, with a short tunnel to the front.

The output vents are like the regular model - just where the sunvisors are.

That was the first time I saw this model. I am pretty sure it's a VW original equipment.
I think I could make it fit pretty easily - but I would have to do some modifications.

The electric wiring and hoses are different. So I am thinking of taking apart the back unit and installing the components in the front plastic housing.

First look indicates that it should fit without major hassles.

By doing that, the only problem I have is the main hose is not long enough to go from the engine compressor to the front.

The other smaller hose that goes to the front radiator is obviously long enough since it goes all the way from the front radiator to the back.

So finally, here are my questions:

Is anyone using this A/C system in their van? Is this unit noisy, since everything is up front?

How does it perform? I would expect it to be very good, since everything is close to the driver.

Is it possible to have the main hose extended? I am wondering if an A/C repair shop or an hydraulic hoses place could do that?

Has anyone ever attempted such installation?

Thanks again for your feedback!

Christian
