Maybe Joel's stats include Canadian sales.  We had 1988 syncros (passenger
and westfalias) in Canada.

For the 1988 winter Olympics in Calgary there were a fleet of syncro
passenger vans imported for use by the German teams and press.  These vans
were later sold locally.  I still see a couple on the road, silver paint
with thin yellow and brown stripes.
