It was back in 1986, coming back from a winter camping trip in my '81 Vanagon, I hit a 2X4 laying in the road. No big deal, I drove the remaining 50 miles home. Next day I had 1/4 tank of gas and it smelled like the Exxon Valdez was just up the block from me. I thought my auxiliary heater had sprung a leak. The 2X4 had poked a hole near the bottom 1/3 of the tank. The dealer cost was astronomical. The few vans in our local wrecking yards looked like they were going to burst from the road salt at any given minute. Two months later, after tens of phone calls, I had a used replacement fuel tank shipped from CO to OH at an ungodly price. IIRC, it was over $500 parts and shipping and I did the labor! What a resource this List and its vendors are. Thank you.
