Steel plate bumpers. Jim Davis out in CA had a front one made that is beefy, good looking, made from flat, welded steel pieces. IIRM there is diamond plate on the top and he had some driving lights and a winch mounted there.
Don't imagine a rear would be out of the question. Much better protection and durable than all the bumpers VW has put on these.
