Multi-Viscosity oils have been around since the 70's. The better one's have it right. Especially the synthetics as they do not need as much of the VI improvers to cover the wide ranges. Lately I've been using the Caterpillar S.O.S. program for testing the oil in some of my vehicles. Regular oil sampling is a service requirement for the Caterpillar engine warranty in my motor home. One of the test results that come back is the viscosity at 100C. I am amazed at how the Mobil 1, 0w-40 is right on spec even after 12k miles. In Phoenix it gets up to 115 degrees. I don't trust that new-fangled multi-vis stuff! Give 'em a couple years to get it right.
