I chickened out and bought the factory fix for the airflow meter  instability
problem. This is a cable with some capacitor in the connectors just  over
$100 from the VW dealer. The part number was given in the discussion.No  problem
since then. There was a link discussion and the fix with a capacitor  was/is
on Harald&Nancy's site.
