NOTE: This sounds like I'm calling all AK dwellers rural yokels. What I
meant was "Living in a desert-southwest city like I do and being accustomed
to this sort of terrain". My wife is originally from Missouri and finds the
lack of vegetation unsettling. By contrast, I find long stretches of forest
that don't end unnerving....
