You mention that sometimes a flywheel seal is too thick.  I have never heard of this, or even thought about it,
but I have a situation that makes me think that may be true.  I have pulled the engine out of my 74 super beetle
twice, replaced the flywheel seal each time, and it spins the seal and begins to leak right away.  I've been pulling
my hair out trying to figure this out.  Maybe it's time to try another brand seal!
