I just spent a very uncomfortable weekend greasing my CV joints on my 85 Westy. The trouble was aligning the wheel side CV bolts to get them started. Flat on my back under the rig---it is difficult to get that first one started. got it eventually but it was a small nightmare. Are there tricks to get the holes aligned that I am not using?? Also, one bolt would not go in, regardless of how i tried. Maybe a bolt was broken off from a previous greasing/change. One bolt was loose to start with and maybe this was it. I didn't have the energy (at 64 years) to disassemble it again and see if the hole was occluded with a bolt fragment. How much of a problem to be running on 5 CV bolts? I'll get it eventually, but I need a few days rest after that ordeal. Also, is CV joint grease always the same?? Found a discount parts house on line that sells CV joint grease at $9 per 400 gram tube----seriously cheaper than anyone sells 90 gram bags of CV grease. Would like to spring for it but don't want to make a fool of myself.
