To those who replied pmail, thanks.  At my insistence the bosch guys went
further into the starter.  The final drive was missing two of the 10 balls
that carry it in the case flutes.  There was a little bit of play in the
bushing, so that's coming too.  The sad part here is that I paid the
original rebuilder (retired his business) to break my starter!

So a new final drive, balls, and bushing are on the way.
