I'm in the thick of doing my heads.  I have the head gasket kit and am
trying to identify the pieces.  This might be useful for others in the
future....  Can you help fill in the blanks as to which part is which and
the required sealants?  Once it's all done I'll repost the photograph for
posterity.  Please see (900kb photograph)

Here's what I have so far:

1) Sticker from kit, P/N 025 198 102A, mfg by Elring
2) Valve Cover Gasket, may be attached to valve cover with most any gasket goop.  Same as beetle.
3) Famous Head/block water jacket gasket.  Attached to both sides with Dirko S or "Right Stuff"
4) Dirko S, for sealing water jacket gasket (3)
5) Combustion chamber sealing gaskets.  No sealant required; may be held in place with grease
while installing.
6) Upper piston O-rings.  No sealant.
7) Lower Piston O-rings.  No sealant.
8) ???  (thick O-ring, unknown application.  Water pump maybe?)
9) Thermostat housing to head O-ring.  No sealant.
10) ???
11) Coolant crossover pipe to head gaskets?  No sealant or any gasket goop unless paranoid.
12) Beats me.  I'd say exhaust (metal gasket) (???)
13) ???
14) Exhaust manifold gaskets.  No sealant
15) Pushrod tube seals (inner)  Permatex 518 or any gasket goop.
16) Pushrod tube seals (outer) same sealant as (15)
17) tiny green o-ring (??? unknown application)
18) metal washer thingy (??? unknown application)
19) copper washer thingy (??? unknown application)
20) Intake manifold to head gasket, as found on my 2.1L engine  No sealant.
21) Another intake/head gasket?  For 1.9 engine maybe?
22) Another intake/head gasket? (???)
