On the vanagon manual tran each k in rpm is approx 19mph so at 3.8k approx
72 mph and 4k about 76mph.  The front tires go to the speedo and any change
in size will cause change in the reading of the speedo.  What size tires are
you running?  Sounds like you are running a larger than stock diameter tire
now.
