I've had that problem at elevation several times. They tell me the trick is to buy gas at every 1,000 feet of elevatation gain. Apparently gasoling is configured differently for differnt elevations. this has seemed to solve the problem for me. As for you friend's problem, I have always been able to beat the fuel smell no start at altitude by removing all the spark plugs and letting the gasoline dry out for a while--an hour--two. Obviously not turning over the engine during the dry out period. After this, for me, the engine always started. Then once I gassed up at altitude it started fine. If the engine hasn't been tuned in a while, a tune up would help. But tha may not be possible where your friend is now. Best, Jeff 83.5 Westy LA,CA
