A base 1.9L, 4 speed without AC or power steering will do ~21 mpg at reasonable highway (~60-65), speeds. I know, I had one! Boy was I surprised when I got the Syncro Westy back in 1988. 17 was the norm on a good day. Turn on the AC at 70 and 15 mpg is about it. Winter commuting seems to take the Syncro down to 13. You might bump it up a half mile per gallon more by cruising at no moe than 55 mph and addiing type F fluid to the trans to help the clutches grab better, but you'll hardly never see 16 mpg. in an automatic Vanagon. If someone makes ridiculous claims otherwise, they are blatantly pevaricating. I really chuckle when I see claims of 21 mpg with a stick Vanagon. LMAO !! RC <<Trvlr2001@AOL.COM(NoNameAvailable Hi trying to work a bit better gas mileage out of my 1986 VanagonGL with automatic transmission. Right now, I am getting a little over 15MPG with mixed Street/Highway driving. What can I do to get this mileage up higher. I have asked about mileage before up here, and gotten indications that my mileage is low.>>
