My 85 GL with 1.9L engine --- 205,000 miles with only a failed water
pump near the 200,000 mark.

My 88 GL with 2.1L engine - 0 to 96,000 miles - three new engines. 1)
Original engine, 2) VW of Canada Remanufactured Engine, 3) Local Rebuild.

Your call!!

I liked the way that 1.9L performed. Bottom end of both engines is
hell-for-stout!~
