Thanks to Dennis and Mark for pointing out the location of the 3rd stage
fan relay. There was indeed a bad ground (it was quite hot with the
thermoswitch jumpered) and also another problem but it seems to be
working fine now. BTW sorry about the reference to an "air cooled 87
syncro" I dont know why I wrote that - early onset senility I presume!
