I have starters from the early aircooled the late air cooled and the early and late water cooled. The only real difference between them is the length of the stud for the 12v from the battery. Sounds like someone gave you a wrong starter. Is there a part number on it? jimt On 7/13/05 1:13 PM, "Georg Apitz" <geapi@CS.UMD.EDU> wrote: > I just got a new starter for my '84 Camper and removed the old one from > the car, the odd thing is the new one is longer about 5cm and the > part that goes > into the engine looks slightly different, after putting it in I > noticed that the > new starter doesn't have a grip inside the engine and therefore > doesn't start the engine. > > The engine was replaced in 1998, but I don't know if they changed the > starter. > Is there any way to adapt the new starter or a way to find out which > starter exactly is needed? > > thanks > > Georg; > >
