My 82 vanagon with its orignial air cooled engine would not pass without a cat. When I did the subie mod I had my mock up exhaust system installed which was using a punched out cat as a space holder awaiting delivery of the cat I was going to use. Forgot and went to emissions with it that way. I passed easily. but when I saw the results I rememebered that I still had the punched out can on there instead of a functioning cat. The much more modern subie engine easily passed the specs for an 82 vanagon. jimt On 7/19/05 5:14 PM, "Art McGinn" <ajmcginn@EARTHLINK.NET> wrote: > last time we had a cat replaced (on a miata) the mechanic said a > newer engine, or one that runs like one, could likely pass an emissions > test without a cat. art '82 westy > > > > > Loren Busch wrote: >> RE: No Cat >> When the engine was being replaced in my '85 it turned out the cat was >> history and had been for some time, all the internal plates broken. >> But the Vanagon had passed emmisions just a couple of months before. >> > >
