I hear about the differences all the time from my wife and her family, and I've seen of it for myself, while visiting. So I was watching 'Bowling for Columbine' a while back... I found it to be a bit of a mixed bag, and I definitely find its author to be a very mixed bag, but it had a what I thought to be a very interesting moment where it has a shot it holds for a while and he says something along the lines of "This is a ghetto in Canada..." It's a stark and quite remarkable contrast.
