Treat it like any canvas tent, don't have anything touching the canvas
if you can aviod it.  That way you will minimize points that can wick
the water through.  I've ridden out a couple of gully wahsers without
problem, and also mild rain with strong winds.  Never had the
combination of strong wind and heavy rain, I'd probably drop the top
in that case.
