Try using a nut and bolt of smaller size and see if that will hold.  Nothing
to loose!

Looks like I stripped the alternator bolt when I was
adjusting the belt--no wonder the belt loosened up
again--

The alternator has only 6,000 mi on it (installed by
PO)--and I hate to replace it--

Any suggestions?
