Cindy,
It may be your choice of tires. We had 185R14 load range D Dunlop tires on our van. They were OK on the highway in the summer but would almost get stuck on a frosty driveway (or wet grass or a bit of mud).
We now have Nokian WR 205/65R15 tires on the van. These tires are rated "All Weather". These tires are much better on any surface. Nokian also makes 14" and 15" tires that are rated as winter tires. Nokian tires can be found with extra load ratings to suit Vanagons.
