North American VW parts data refers to about 10 different color patterns for front 2wd springs alone. Rear springs that went along with a given color dot pattern of fronts can have a different color and number of dots than the fronts. VW apparently graded the springs as they were made. The number of colored dots designated those deemed to be close enough to each other to be used in a pair. That means that a given spring rate and length could have 1, 2, or sometimes 3 dots, same color but both springs in a pair would also have the same number of dots. Just knowing the color of the dot(s) may not help unless you know what year they came from. Some years ago I attempted to research the various springs that were used on 2wd Vanagons. I pulled and crudely measured samples from a lot of years. My results were meager and confusing. I have since misplaced my notes. On some springs I found a 3 digit number as well as colored dots. I believe that the combination of those 2 bits of info will define the part number of the spring. In some cases you can use that to determine what model they came from. IIRC, the 3 digit numbers were one of 3 choices....251....253.....255 and the dots were either blue, brown, or yellow.
