On mine the first symptom was the van playing dead along I-40 near Moriarty New Mexico.  I had unknowingly been driving on the battery all day.  Limped back to Alber-q-q using the aux battery and picked up a new alternator.  Installed it in the auto parts store parking lot and drove off.

That dern light never did come on.
