I think a set of  emergency flares on the fenders would look excellent

Karl,

They are called steel arches. And for that matter, those things they add to
the steel wheel arches are also called wheel arches and not flares. Besides
if the wheel openings are expanded, shouldn't they be "flaired" as opposed
to "flared"?
