I think the early ones had a Peugeot gas engine too. Similar to a vanagon
in that it was often broken(electrical problem).Chrysler owned Simca which
somehow became part of Peugeot.I think this is how the engine came to be in
an Omni. Would a Peugeot  504 diesel fit the vanagon?
