The Meineke manager called my cell phone and made an offer to settle. I'm
sure the fact that I disputed the charge on my credit card and it got bounced
back had something to do with it. We agreed that I'd pay what the VW dealer
would have charged me. Still more than I wanted to pay, but half the original
bill.

Thanks to everyone on the list who offered help and suggestions. I'm sure  it
made an impression on the folks at Meineke HQ
