On late model Vanagons (certainly by 1991, though not in 1986), there
is a Large circular VW in a circle emblem in the middle of the hatch.

On at least one occassion someone had replaced the black backdrop on
this emblem  with a lighted circular brake light, so that it shown
through the emblem.

In Brazil, they did something different, by making the emblem itself
the light. I used to have bookmark for a site that sold the Brazilian
one. The other was a custom built job.
