Excess oil also helps to foul the catalytic converter! -----Original Message----- From: Anthony Egeln [mailto:regnsuzanne@yahoo.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 15, 2006 10:52 PM To: Dennis Haynes; vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Subject: Re: Is it normal... WOW!!! You just answered a question I've been waiting to ask the list. I've been getting the oil pressure buzzer and light after a run on the highway as I decelerate on the off-ramp. Goes away when I accelerate, and doesn't happen at all around town. Coincidently this started after my tech replaced the oil cooler seal (had a leak). It's all very clear now..they overfilled it. The buzzer/light doesn't happen much...should I just let it burn off or should the excess be removed? The dipstick shows very little overage...just topped off. Thank you sooo much for solving this little mystery! Anthony '89 Syncro GL (Hidalgo) Dennis Haynes <dhaynes@OPTONLINE.NET> wrote: Usual causes are overfillitis or piston rings not doing there job. Some oil vapor is normal. But if you get massive amounts into the intake track, something is wrong. Keep the oil level between the marks on the dipstick Do not attempt to keep the level at the top mark. The top mark is not the full mark. It is the maximum do not ever exceed not matter what mark. The Vanagon engine is extremely sensitive to overfilling. When over full, oil temps go up, viscosity goes down. Oil lights and buzzers get tested after long highway runs. Very high speeds make thing worse as while the viscosity goes down the temps go up some more and the vicious cycle goes until you get the buzzer or a rod out the top. All this while the water temp is perfectly normal. I just took mine apart to fix vacuum leaks and found oil all over the place. Shouldn't there be some kind of one-way valve between the crankcase and the vacuum hoses? Cleaned it all up, of course, but what will stop this from happening again? _____ Brings words and photos together (easily) with PhotoMail <http://us.rd.yahoo.com/mail_us/taglines/PMall/*http:/photomail.mail.yah oo.com> - it's free and works with Yahoo!
