My 1.9 has had noticable piston slap since the first time it was rolled over after a rebuild, over 100K miles ago. It has not gotten any worse (Thank you, God!), but it hasn't gotten any better, either. It has survived at least two accidental 5000+ rpm episodes, with no noticable effects. ( Second gear, Automatic trans, on the freeway... ...ooops).

  Piston slap CAN be lived with, if it didn't start in the middle of your engine's life. If it suddenly just "appears", then there is usually an issue of importance.
