I always see an increase in gas mileage when cruising around NC
mountains.  I agree with the observation that lower, steady
cruising speeds on the curvy mountain roads yield higher
mileage.  I get around 20-22 MPG in my Vanagon and 49 MPG in my
Beetle TDI.  The latter cruises faster, of course :-P.
